The Latest on the NFL

Yesterday the NFL announced plans for their “Let’s Listen Together” campaign, “a joint player and ownership commitment focused on social justice” as the organization described it. Let’s Listen Together will focus on “supporting programs and initiatives that reduce barriers to opportunity”  and states that “improvements in education and economic development, community and police relations, and the criminal justice system” will be given high priority. The NFL also announced two grants for active and retired players who “develop social justice programming” or who have partnered with non-profits that align with their cause. Furthermore, the NFL’s government division will work to support the Players Coalition, players, and clubs that are interested in government reform at any of the three levels. Read more here.

That’s cool and all, but what about Kap? Well many online are speculating that the Oakland Raiders may sign Colin Kaepernick. If thus is the case, the collusion case the quarterback turned activist is pursuing, may go away. Read more about the case here.

Colin Kaepernick and Uncle Snoop Are Blessing Others

Meanwhile Kaepernick donated $10,000 to Dallas-based Mothers Against Police Brutality as part of his pledge of $1 million in charitable giving. Snoop Dogg matched Kap’s pledge of $10,000 and then donated $15,000 more. Together they donated $35,000 to the organization.

Go Mary!

Congratulations are in order for Mary J. Blige, who is nominated for not just one but two Oscars! The R&B icon earned a nod for best supporting actress for her role in Mudbound and another nod for best original song, Mighty River, which is on the Mudbound soundtrack. This is the first time in Oscar history someone has been nominated for both a role and an original song for the same film.

This is another win for the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul who was also honored with her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame earlier this month.
