Fancy: How would you describe your swagher? What makes Johanna, Johanna?
JS: Sassy, classy, and confident! I am a visionary and straight-shooter who sees things differently than the majority. I have a love affair with words, along with a big heart for helping others overcome life’s issues.
Fancy: Why did you decide to write under a pen name?
JS: I wanted to write under a name that was different than the one used for my children’s books, and Johanna Sparrow was the name that was shown to me in a dream.
Fancy: Please share a little about the Universal Consciousness Connection.
JS: By learning from the negative occurrences in your life, you can overcome them and stop experiencing them. Change your perspective from why is this happening to me to what is being done for me. What appears to be negative is actually a positive boost that will make you a better person. You always have the ability to unlock the power of the Universal Consciousness Connection (UCC) and redirect your life in the direction you want it to go.
Fancy: Your last book, Breakthrough, is a self-help book, but your upcoming book, Mildred Secrets & Lies, appears to be a novel. We know you’ve been writing for over two decades, but is this your first novel and what inspired you to write it?
JS: No, this is not my first novel. I have written two others, Laura Patrice and The Jacobs. What inspired me to write Mildred was family stories I remembered hearing during childhood. It’s amazing what adults say around children when they think they aren’t listening. I never forgot many of those tales that were told by loved ones.
Fancy: Tell us more about Mildred.
JS: Mildred is about a woman who recounts her life as a servant girl for a black family. While in her golden years, she begins to reflect on how blessed her life has been. During this process, she finds out that she was the product of incest and that the family she’d worked for all those years didn’t know that she was the child they’d sent away to an orphanage. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Many more secrets and lies are revealed.
Fancy: Do you have a writing routine? If so, please share.
JS: Yes, I have a writing routine. I work on multiple books at the same time because it keeps me alert and with fresh ideas.
Fancy: As a relationship expert, you help others get through tough times. But what is the hardest obstacle you’ve endured, and how did you overcome it?
JS: Rejection from my mother. Daily, I struggled with the idea of fighting for someone who didn’t care about me or love me. It was extremely difficult to deal with, but I overcame the brokenness and pain of abandonment by talking to others and writing.
Fancy: Who are some of your favorite authors and why?
JS: Tyler Perry, Terry McMillan, Oprah Winfrey, and Toni Morrison. Their work inspires me to write what’s in my heart despite what others may think.
Fancy: If you could co-author a book with any well-known, best-selling author, who would you pick and why?
JS: Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Terry McMillan, and J.K. Rowling. They are excellent writers, and I could learn so much from them on literary, business, and personal levels.
Fancy: Please share any upcoming projects or events you may have.
JS: I will be releasing a novel, Mildred, on February 28, 2018, and I will be at Book Expo America, May 30–June 3, 2018, with my book A Life of Turmoil: The Short Stories of Ana Franken.
