A Black man was killed in a police involved shooting during a visit from a Department of Children and Family Services caseworker last night in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

According to the news, 23-year- old Calvin Toney, was fatally shot after struggling with a Baton Rouge police officer who was escorting the caseworker to Palms Apartments on McClelland Drive.

Reports state a stun gun was used in the altercation, and District Attorney Hillar Moore, reviewed the body cam footage while still at the scene last night. The footage has not been released to the public, but last night, Moore was said to have explained that suspects are often handcuffed after being shot. It was said that Moore wanted to dispel any incorrect rumors, implying that Toney was not handcuffed when he was fatally shot but was handcuffed afterwards.

A crowd gathered last night at the location, and at times they were seen chanting. Mayor Sharon Weston-Broome was also on the scene, and told WAFB reporters that while she understands the community’s frustration due to past events in the city (such as Alton Sterling, not directly stated) and other cities, they/ we should wait until the Louisiana State Troopers completed their investigations. LSP handles cases where police are involved like this one.

The officer’s name has not been released but WAFB was sure to let us know that he is Black and also on paid administrative leave. It also is not clear why DCFS was visiting Toney’s apartment, but a little digging shows Toney  may have had other incidents with the police surrounding his daughter.

The following video was taken last night after the events occurred by Lil Kill Production and we believe that is Toney’s sister speaking most of the time. Please excuse the language.

Note, we will always root for Black but I report stories with the information presented to me. If you have more information, you can always contact us at
