In 2011, Monica  Thomas started her own business AngelFayss Productions LLC® in Valdosta, Georgia, providing mobile beauty services to clients in the comfort of their homes or selected venues for weddings, retreats or other social events.  Then later, she started AngelFayss Cosmetics in 2014. Most recently, she ventured out and introduced a monthly beauty box subscription service that has sparked the interest of beauty enthusiasts and makeup artists across the globe

                                                              

Fancy: How would you describe your swagher? What makes Monica, Monica?
Monica:
When I was a teenager, I remember my father saying to me that I had a dangerous mind.  He often expressed his concern, because he didn’t know if my “dangerous mind” would be a good thing or bad thing for me in the future.  My dad knew if there was something I put mind to, I was going to go after it and that I would not allow anything to stop me.  Well, I must admit that I did get into a little bit trouble at times, but I do believe that my strong will, determination and a whole lot of prayers are part of what has enabled me to be where I am today.  Becoming an entrepreneur is not easy.  Everyone that travels this path will face times of uncertainty and often question whether their dreams or aspirations are worth the struggle.  The answer to those questionable moments always should be ‘this is worth it.’  No matter what it may look like now and no matter what others think about it, my dreams and my aspirations are a part of my destiny, and I can’t let anything stop me from getting there.

My strong will, determination, and all the things my parents instilled in me are foundation of who I am, but I can’t ignore all the development I’ve obtained during my time as an active duty Air Force member.  Being in a military environment can be very challenging; however, the overall structure is designed to develop and teach you how to go beyond yourself for a greater purpose.  Recognizing that every person I encounter or every challenge I face while serving, is developing me for a greater purpose is not always my initial thought, but when I take time to reflect, it is then that I realize that my talents and abilities are being strengthened.  And of course, I get to employ those skills when developing and managing the day-to-day operations of my business.
Fancy: What inspired AngelFayss?
Monica:
While attending cosmetology school, I began developing ideas for starting my own business within the beauty industry.  I envisioned providing services and creating a place where my clients/customers knew they were valued and appreciated, and not just another number.  More importantly, I wanted to deliver a message that let them know their individual beauty is what makes them “fearfully and wonderfully made…beautiful!”  I had several faithful clients during cosmetology school that were more than just clients; I considered them to be messengers (angels) of hope, encouragement, and support.  They truly were a source of inspiration for me, and it made my time in cosmetology school such an enjoyable and rewarding experience.  As a result, I could capture and accentuate beauty in ways that empowered them to accept their individual beauty.  Every client I had truly help bring the overall vision I had for my business to life, and it is a tribute to each of them for inspiring AngelFayss.

Fancy: What are some of your most popular products?
Monica:
Our angels (yes, I call them angels too) give us rave reviews about all the products. The most popular items from AngelFayss Cosmetics line is lipstick, lip gloss, vinyl lip lacquer, blush, and liquid velvet lipstick.

Fancy: So how did the subscription box come about?
Monica:
The idea for the subscription service came about while talking to a fellow stylist who expressed frustration about another subscription service she was currently receiving.  Her chief complaints were that she usually received only one item that she really liked and that the product quality was beginning to decline.  I asked her what type of products she liked, and if she would be willing to purchase a subscription box from AngelFayss Cosmetics if it was available.  She was overly ecstatic about the idea and that was the spark of motivation I needed to start planning.  I went back home and started doing some research on various beauty box subscriptions that were currently available and reputable host sites.  I understood that I would be entering this venture competing with well-known cosmetic brands/companies, however, I was determined to offer the service and advertise AngelFayss Cosmetics product line in another forum.  I released a pre-launch site on my Facebook page to see how many people were interested in the service and within two days, there were over 20 people that signed up for the subscription service.  Most of the people that signed up were existing customers, and they were the ones that really pushed the service by sharing it with their family and friends.

Fancy: What does the box usually consist of and how often are they released?
Monica:
The beauty box subscription consists of two to three full size AngelFayss Cosmetics products – lipstick, blush, mink lashes, vinyl lip lacquer, lip gloss, mascara, etc.  In addition, various AngelFayss branded accessory items such as t-shirts, makeup bags, coffee mugs, portable chargers or totes are also included in boxes.  I personally customize each subscriber’s beauty box and keep a tracker of the products that are sent each month so no two boxes are the same.  I have developed personal relationships with some of the subscribers, so being able to pick out their favorite products each month keeps the experience fun and intimate.  It’s such a great feeling when your subscribers contact you and say how much they love their box or tell you how much they appreciate having products that are hand-picked just for them.

Our store front site is opened from the 1st – 7th of each month via the subscription box marketplace host site Cratejoy.  The seven-day window allows for up to 15 new subscribers each month to help manage and plan for regular inventory purchasing cycles.  The subscription options are month-to-month, 3 months prepay, or 12 months prepay which is automatically renewed on the 15th of each month.  However, subscribers have the option to cancel or change the renewal date at any time.  Once the renewal process takes place, products are selected and shipped out by the 25th of each month.  With the overwhelming response we’ve had from customers from around the globe, our store usually sells out within the first 72 hours of opening each month.

Fancy: What are some things to consider when starting a subscription box?
Monica:
Some of the things I considered when starting the subscription box service were sustainability and product variety.  Having the ability to provide the subscription service is great and it appeals to many people, however, as a business owner it would be irresponsible of me to present a service without the proper means to sustain it.  Moreover, having a variety of high-quality products is very important factor for me.  I want my customers to thoroughly enjoy the products and be excited about the subscription boxes they receive each month.  I refuse to give them the same thing over and over again.  The subscription service and my brand are a reflection of me.  When people see or hear the name AngelFayss Cosmetics, not only do I want people to think “fearfully and wonderfully made…beautiful” – I want them to feel it!  Quality, unique, amazing, elegant, alluring, the best, classy, and phenomenal – this is what customers are saying about AngelFayss now.  I plan to do everything I can to keep the momentum going and make these attributes the legacy for AngelFayss.

Fancy: Do you aspire to take on any ventures outside of the beauty industry?
Monica:
I’m always up for new experiences or opportunities, and there are a few ventures outside of the beauty industry that I would like to explore.  One of those ventures would be wedding or event planning.  I enjoy organizing and planning and I’ve had the opportunity to help some friends coordinate/plan their weddings over the years.  Weddings and events just seem to be a great fit for me, and I think it is an area that I could be successful in.  Lastly, I have entertained the idea of writing a book one day.  It would be a personal testament of my life with the underlying message being positivity and hope.  I believe everyone has a story and if you’re willing to share it, it can help someone along the way.

Fancy: Do you have any upcoming events or projects that you care to share with our following?
Monica:
One project that will be launching this fall is the Angel of the Month program.  I’m really looking forward to this upcoming project, because it is another way that I get to show my appreciation to the loyal customers who continuously support and invest in AngelFayss Cosmetics.  The Angel of the Month will be the face of AngelFayss Cosmetics for the month and will be highlighted in advertisement and marketing features.  Customers that want to participate in the program will be randomly selected during their birth month.  The person selected to be the Angel of the Month will receive a package filled AngelFayss Cosmetics and accessory items.  In addition, the Angel of the Month will get and exclusive preview of all the hot new items that are being incorporated to the cosmetic line before they are released or advertised to the public.  This is also a way to build brand ambassadors for AngelFayss Cosmetics and hopefully propel the company to another platform.
