Meet sisters Layla and Roxy Phillips, the six year old and four year-old Black girl golfers, who are being compared to Venus and Serena Williams. Layla just placed at the Southern California PGA drive, chip, and putt competition.
The sisters were gifted free golf lessons for a year after their mother, Jasimen Phillips, complained about the golf balls being hit into their yard from the neighboring golf course.
Through a program called Help Youth Through Golf under CEO Luis Batson the sisters are training. Batson himself says he can only compare them to the Williams sisters, who also hail from Compton, CA.
While Roxy will not be able to compete until she is five, her mom believes she will do as well as Layla, because she has the ability to see and mimic swings. However, Jasimen says their education and school are their first priorities and hinted at the girls getting full rides to Stanford.
