Get Well Soon Charles Kinsey, North Miami Police Shoot Caretaker

While we are relieved to not have a new hashtag, most of us are still having a “WTH” moment after reading the story of Charles Kinsey, the Black Florida therapist who was shot Monday while trying to assist an autistic patient.

Kinsey can be seen on video footage lying on his back with his hands in the air, trying to explain to the police that he is a therapist and his patient is playing with a truck. “All he has is a toy truck. A toy truck. I am a behavior therapist at a group home,” Kinsey says on the video while talking with North Miami Police.

Apparently Kinsey’s patient had escaped the group home on Monday. In spite of his attempt, Kinsey is shot in the leg. In news interviews, Kinsey says he initially thought it was a mosquito bite, but then realizes he has been shot and asks the officer “Sir why did you shoot me?” Kinsey says the officer replied, “I don’t know.”

He goes on to say the officers rushed him, flipped him face down on the ground, cuffed him, and let him remain there until the rescue squad came.

Kinsey is still recovering from his leg wound in the hospital, and the officers have been placed on leave. We have asked this question before, but does it not seem like a big part of the problem is these officers are not properly trained, or as Cardi B. asks are they just that intimidated by a Black man?
