Black All-Girls Detroit Chess Team Takes First Place in Annual Chess Championship



A five girl team from Detroit City Chess Club  consisting of University Prep Science & Math students placed first in the acclaimed 13th Annual KCF All-Girls National Championships  in the “Under 14” category last weekend on April 24th.

It was eighth grader Jada Hamilton’s win in the final round that led to their title.  Other girls on the team included twin sisters, Jada and Jaidyn Hamilton; Lauren Bradford; Sa’Nya Burton; and Gisele Motley. There also was a fifth grader who competed in another division, Charisse Wood .
The girls have placed in other tournaments  before but this has been their biggest win. In preparation for the championship they were tutored by a chess master.
