Ida Keeling is 100 years old, almost 4’3” and 83 lbs, and she still runs races and marathons.
Although she says she was not very athletic in her younger years, Keeling began running at the age of 67. while dealing with ongoing health issues and mourning the deaths of her sons. Both men were killed due to what was believed to be street violence.
Her daughter, Shelly Keeling, who was once a high school track and field coach, suggested her mom give running a try.
The two participated in their first race together. “Good Lord I thought that race was going to never end, but afterwards I felt free,” Keeling shared with the New York Times.
Since then Keeling has gone on to hold many titles and currently holds the fastest time for American women ages 95-99 in the 60 meter dash with a time of 59.8 seconds.
Keeling says she has always been fast but she worked as window washer and babysitter when younger. After her husband passed, she worked in a sewing factory and also partook in Malcolm X demonstrations.
