Wednesday Wonder Woman: Kim Davis

Kim Davis is the owner of Kim’s Bead Palace. Born and raised in Baltimore Maryland, she developed a passion for making handmade stretch bracelet about a year ago.

What motivated you to start your beading business?

Making stretch bracelets started out only as a hobby. My daughter and granddaughter encouraged me to make and sell my creations to others.

What inspires your designs?

It all depends; sometimes a customer may ask me to design a bracelet set with a particular theme, but for the most part I just do whatever comes to mind. It may be diva mode or inspiration mode; I just sit at my table, lay out my beads, and start designing.

What do you think sets your jewelry apart?

All my bracelets are uniquely handmade by me. I create one of a kind stretch bracelets using the best quality beads. My creations can be worn with any outfit and for any occasion.

What is one obstacle you overcame and how did you do so?

The one obstacle I overcame was having confidence. I overcame that by focusing on my craft. I also began wearing my own creations, and people admired my bracelets, so that really helped me gain a lot of confidence.

How do you balance a full time job and working and growing your business?

It all balances out, because I put myself on schedule so I won’t get overwhelmed. Five days a week I work a couple of hours after work at home. On the weekend, I may spend part of my day designing bracelets. I enjoy every moment of it, because it’s so relaxing.

We noticed you mentioned your daughter and granddaughter, what are your thoughts on starting a business or career later in life?

I think it’s great, because you have more time to devote to your business. Kids are grown; responsibilities are less. Most of your finances are in order, and you know exactly what direction you want to go in. So when I’m ready to retire from my 9 to 5, I will have my business to keep me busy.

Do you have any upcoming projects or events that you care to share?

Right now I’m working on finding locations to set up a pop up shop and perhaps some vending.

What words of inspiration would you care to share with our followers?

Follow your dreams and do what makes you happy. Never let anyone put negative thoughts in your mind, always believe in yourself. One door may close but best believe another will open. The key to being successful is to remain humble, have patience, be able to take constructive criticism (but don’t let that discourage you), and don’t stop until you get to where you want to be!
