Sheri Booker, a NAACP “Outstanding Literary Work from a Debut Author”award winner lives in Baltimore. Her second novel Nine Years Under: Coming of Age in an Inner City Funeral Home is a memoir that encapsulates her time working at Wylie Funeral Home in Baltimore from the ages of 15 to 23 following the death of her Aunt Mary. Booker states that she has been writing all her life since elementary school. She started with her school newspaper. Her passion for writing later translated into her writing novels. Her first novel was One Woman, One Hustle: Short Stories and Poetry Written on Inspiration, Identity and Love. Booker has always sought to inspire her readers through her work. She assured me that her memoir was thoroughly vetted meaning that everything stated in it is one hundred percent how it happened.” I had to do research, interview people, and my editors’ fact checked. Anything I was unsure of I made that clear to my readers by saying to my recollection.” Booker takes her inspiration from books such as The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott, and The Bible to name a few.
If she could choose anyone to be her mentor she would choose Maya Angelou because Angelou was able to do a poetry and prose ,and she would love to ask her how she was able to write perfectly for both, and I often struggle with writing prose that would be perfect for poetry. She would like to thank her publicist, editors and friends that helped her stay focused and supported her throughout the writing of her memoir. Booker believes she learned a lot about herself from during the years she worked at Wylie Funeral Home from writing Nine Years Under. During her interviews from the novel, she learned that she had become cold, desensitized to death, which she had not realized until she started interviewing people for her book. She wants her readers to know that in all of her writing, she strives to inspire you to tell your own story.
