What inspired you to start your business?
I’ve always been a big jewelry/accessory “junkie” when it came to fashion. But, it wasn’t until I moved to New Orleans that my interest in learning how to make jewelry became one of my top priorities. While walking through the mall one day, I noticed that most of the jewelry I was looking at was made EXACTLY alike and the EXACT same piece could be found in many different stores. It was then that I decided to take jewelry making classes at The Bead Shop in New Orleans, LA simply because I wanted to start making my own jewelry that I knew no one else would have. I started making simple bracelets, and I would wear them from time to time. I posted my creations on Facebook, simply being proud of my accomplishments, and I received many likes, and one comment that asked if I was selling them. I replied not at the moment, and that’s when I started to think about selling my bracelets.
As I started wearing my bracelets, I began to get asked more and more about where did I get them from, and I would always reply “I made them”. One day, as I was leaving church, a lady asked me the same question and I replied with the same answer, then she asked me how much would I sell the bracelet I was wearing for. I thought about it and just gave an arbitrary price of $10 and she took the money from her purse and gave it to me. So I thought “Ok, maybe I’m on to something here. People always ask me about my bracelets, and I was able to sell one off my arm so easily”. I pondered and pondered, and I decided to make more bracelets, post them on Facebook, and I posted, “If interested, ask me for price”. That’s where it all started. I would get so many inquiries about prices and if I could make different colors, and I was a bit in awe.
One day, I thought to myself, I’m a woman that absolutely LOVES jewelry and many women, like myself, like to have certain statement pieces to add to their outfit or wardrobe. Moreover, many of us don’t like seeing other ladies with the exact same thing we have. So, I decided that day I would step out on faith and start my business and call it “Beading By Treva B.”
When was it founded?
The birth of Beading By Treva B. happened in March 2013, and has since evolved due to the support, word of mouth, and display of the jewelry I have created by and for family, friends, friends of friends, and social media.
What products or services do you provide?
I provide beaded jewelry for men, women, teens, kids, and babies. I hand craft bracelets, necklaces, earrings (pierced and clip), and anklets.
What makes your business or brand different?
Beading By Treva B. is a jewelry collection made up of unique HANDMADE jewelry accessories for all. No piece is created alike and I specialize in unique handmade beaded jewelry made to order. I also try and keep price points below $40 which is the highest I charge for a complete set (necklace, earrings, and bracelets). In Louisiana, there are not many jewelry artists who are able to sell their items such low costs nor are there many jewelry artists in the area.
What future plans do you have for your brand or business?
Future plans for my business include being involved in more vendor shows and showcases, being a vendor at events outside of Louisiana, having my jewelry featured in more fashion shows, making my brand known nationwide, and expanding to a larger market.
Beading By Treva B. will be featured at one of the largest artists’ showcases in New Orleans, RAW:NOLA, October 22, 2014. Beading By Treva B. is also continuously appearing at various shows across Louisiana throughout the remainder of the year.
