The Scoop: Terri J. Vaughn Dishes About Girlfriends’ Getaway

If you have been following on Instagram, it’s looked like Terri J. Vaughn, Garcelle Beauvais, Malinda Williams, and Essence Atkins simply took a really cool trip this summer. Unbeknownst to some of us, they were actually filming a comedy “Girlfriends’ Getaway”.
Beauvais stars in the movie as a sophisticated and successful business woman (Vicky Holmes), who is dumped by her boyfriend a few days before their planned romantic trip for Holmes’s birthday. We had the pleasure of speaking with Vaughn, who plays Sofie, Holmes’s five months pregnant friend.

Ok, so when we first heard about the movie on the radio, we heard something about someone steals somebody’s weed?

Lol! Somebody-  one of us! Since we’re out in Trinidad on vacation, they decide that they want to smoke some weed, so they decided to buy weed from a guy, and it turns into this whole big misunderstanding, and it ends up causing my character to be kidnapped by this weed guy. So we’re out there dealing with that too.

Tell us about your character. Who is Sofie?

She’s the friend that is friends with everybody, so everybody else is friends. She’s the link. She’s the peacemaker. She’s the Libra of the bunch.

What do you all hope viewers take from this movie?

We’re hoping for a couple of things. Friendship, valuing time with your friends, because I think that as we get our older we kind of lose touch of that. We’re focused on our families, of course, and work and careers, and we lose touch of that part of us that was free, loving, and fun with our friends, and depending on our friends, and supporting our friends. I think it’s important for us as women to get back to that. It feeds our soul and our spirit on another level that our husbands can’t or our kids can’t. It’s another part of being a woman.
For my character, it’s about accepting who you are and what you are as being enough, not being validated by being a mother or whatever your career. It’s just kind of a “I’m valuable just because of who I am. I don’t have to change for my man” (mentality). I feel like a lot of women do that once they get in relationships. It’s like we start doing the things that our love ones want us to do, and we kind of lose the stuff that makes us happy before we got with them. I think it is important to hold on to that.

The movie premieres this weekend, correct?

Yes, this Saturday at 8 o’clock on TVOne. I think it encores at 11 o’clock. Then it comes on again Sunday at nine I believe. For the 8 o’clock premiere on Saturday, we’re promoting a nationwide watch party. We’re all going to be having parties in our own homes. We’re inviting friends over to watch, and we’re going to be tweeting with all the fans watching, so we’re promoting for us all to watch it together and get popcorn and have drinks. Well I won’t be drinking, but my friends will have wine.

If you’re planning to join the nationwide watch party and participate on Twitter, the hashtag is #GirlfriendsGetaway!

Get to know Vaughn better in our soon to be released September/October 2014 issue.
