SwagHer Magazine: What does fashion mean to you?
Kym Stylz: Fashion is my way of expressing myself.
SM: How would you define your city’s fashion?
KS: Bay Area has influenced my style a lot. It is different from LA style mostly due to weather constraints. Bay Area fashion tends to be a little more covered up. I like that covered sup, but still sexy look.
SM: When did you realize you wanted to become a fashion designer?
KS: I have always loved to draw, and I have always had great style. My mom instilled in me the importance of looking well put together. This is what sparked my interest in fashion designing.
SM: What is your favorite part about being a fashion designer?
KS: My favorite part of being a fashion designer is dressing up and doing the Barbie thing. It is still like being a child. In addition, I think that is the best thing is bringing designs to life.
SM: What did you think when you received the invitation to participate in Vancouver fashion week?
KS: I was overjoyed. I was invited to do fashion week in Johannesburg around that same time. I had been working hard for a long time, so I was not surprised. I knew God was going to do great things in my life.
SM: What are your plans for the future?
KS: I plan to travel in the future. I believe that my brand is international; I plan to travel to Europe and Africa. I want to move to New York. I plan to do more charities. I auditioned for Project Runway season 13 and having my designs featured on more shows.
SM: What was the best fashion advice you ever got?
KS: The President of The Academy of Art & Couture, Sonia Été, told me do not be afraid to express yourself. You have so much to express. She is like my fashion mother, and she is a great mentor.
SM: What advice do you have other aspiring fashion designers?
KS: I started in 2003; I have worked my butt off for the success that I am seeing now. My advice would be to never give up and never think you know more than you do.
SM: What has been the biggest challenge or hurdle to get past in your career so far?
KS: Be prepared for the rat race of being broke. You have to be willing to work for something.
SM: What were your inspirations for the design you choose for this spread?
KS: I am an Eco-Friendly designer so that influences my designs.
Editor’s Note: Kym will be showcased her new Eco-line during the Gabby Wild Foundation Showcase in New York.
